Password Strength Checker

Runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is uploaded.

What it does

The checker scores a password from 0 to 5 using five simple rules: at least 8 characters, at least 12 characters, a mix of upper and lower case, at least one digit, and at least one character that is not a letter or number. Each rule met adds a point, and the total maps to a label from Very weak to Excellent.

It is a quick way to see why a password falls short of a typical sign-up policy, or to explain to a client or teammate what makes a password harder to guess. The score updates on every keystroke, so you can see exactly which change moves it.

How to use it

  1. 1

Type a password into the Password field. It is masked, and the Show password button reveals it if you need to check it.

  2. 2

Read the Score tile (0/5 to 5/5) and the Strength label.

  3. 3

Check the Length and Has symbol tiles to see what to change.

  4. 4

Edit the password and watch the score update.

What you get

Four tiles: Score (x/5), Strength (Very weak, Weak, Fair, Good, Strong or Excellent), Length in characters, and Has symbol (Yes or No).

When to use it

Check against sign-up rules
See at a glance whether a password meets common requirements for length, mixed case, digits and symbols.
Explain password policy to teams
Type examples live in a meeting to show how adding length or a symbol moves the score.
Compare two candidate passwords
Type each in turn and compare the Score and Length tiles before choosing one.

Example

Input

Password1!

Output

Score 4/5, Strength: Strong, Length 10, Has symbol: Yes

It scores well on the rules, yet it is one of the most commonly guessed patterns. The checker measures composition, not whether a password is predictable.

Tips

  • The field hides what you type by default. Click Show password to check for typos, then Hide password again before anyone can see your screen.
  • The score does not check dictionaries or leaked-password lists, so predictable patterns like Summer2024! can still score highly. Treat 5/5 as a minimum, not proof of safety.
  • A space counts as a symbol, so a long passphrase of lowercase words scores points for length and symbol but not for mixed case or digits.
  • For a password that is both high-scoring and unpredictable, use the Password Generator and then confirm it here.

Questions

What does a 5/5 password score mean here?

The password is at least 12 characters long, mixes upper and lower case, and contains at least one digit and one non-alphanumeric character. It is the most the rules can award, labelled Strong at 4 and Excellent at 5.

Why does a long passphrase score lower than a short complex password?

Length only earns up to two points (8+ and 12+ characters). The other three points come from character variety, so an all-lowercase passphrase caps at 3/5 even if it is very long.

Does this checker know if my password has been leaked?

No. It only looks at length and which kinds of characters appear. To check exposure, use a breach-check service that supports anonymous lookups, such as the one built into many password managers.

Is the password I type sent to a server?

The score is calculated in the page with a few pattern checks on each keystroke. There is no submit button and no request is made with the password.
