What it does

This viewer reports the file-level details your browser can see when you open an image: width and height in pixels, file size, format, full MIME type, file name, the last-modified timestamp, and the aspect ratio as a decimal. It is a fast way to identify what a file really is when the name does not say.

Be aware of what it does not do: it does not parse EXIF, so camera model, lens, GPS, and capture date are not shown. The Modified value comes from your file system, which often reflects when the file was saved or downloaded rather than when the photo was taken.

How to use it

What you get

Width and height in pixels, file size (B, KB, or MB), short type (for example jpeg), plus a File details list with name, full MIME type, local last-modified date and time, and aspect ratio to three decimals.

When to use it

Identify a mislabeled file
Check whether "photo.png" is really a PNG or a JPEG with the wrong extension by reading the MIME type.
Check a file before upload
Confirm width, height, and file size before submitting to a form with size or dimension limits.
Find the latest version
Compare Modified timestamps across exports with similar names to see which was saved last.

An aspect of 1.333 is 4:3, the default shape of most phone camera photos.

Tips

  • For a simplified ratio like 4:5 instead of a decimal, use the image dimension checker.
  • To remove hidden camera and GPS tags, run the file through Remove EXIF; this viewer cannot see or edit them.
  • The Modified date changes when a file is copied or downloaded, so treat it as a file-system date, not proof of capture time.

Questions

Why doesn't the metadata viewer show camera model or GPS location?

It reads only what the browser exposes about the file and image: name, type, size, modified time, and dimensions. It does not parse EXIF blocks inside the file.

Is the Modified date the day the photo was taken?

Not necessarily. It is the file's last-modified time from your device, which updates when the file is edited, exported, or sometimes downloaded.

What does the Aspect value of 0.8 mean?

Aspect is width divided by height. 0.8 is a 4:5 portrait image, 1.000 is square, and 1.778 is 16:9 landscape.

Can it read HEIC photos from an iPhone?

Only if your browser can decode HEIC. Safari generally can; most other browsers show an error, so export the photo as JPEG first.
